Introduction
Following the huge success of last year, we’re thrilled to be back at the stunning Hardwick Hall for another summer of paddling fun! If you’re looking for an unforgettable family adventure, this is it.
Experience the magic of kayaking on the picturesque lake at Hardwick Hall, Derbyshire, a breathtaking National Trust property rich in history. Built between 1590 and 1597, this Elizabethan masterpiece provides a truly unique backdrop to your day on the water. Limited availability – so book now before slots fill up!
Pricing
- £15 per person (all kayaks are solo craft – one person per kayak)

What’s Included?
- A solo kayak, paddle, and buoyancy aid
- Basic tips and a safety briefing to get you started
- A full hour of independent paddling – no instructor, just you, the lake, and the adventure!

What to Bring
To ensure you have the best experience, wear clothing suitable for the weather on the day. Here’s what we recommend:
- Quick-drying layers or modest swimwear
- MANDATORY; Closed-toe shoes that stay secure (old trainers are perfect – NO Crocs, sandals, or flip-flops! Footwear is mandatory)
- For cooler days: Fleeces and waterproof layers to keep warm
- A towel and a full change of dry clothes (including dry footwear) for after your session
Important Information
- Non-refundable & non-transferable bookings – Double-check your date and time before booking.
- Sessions run in all weathers (except extreme conditions like lightning or high winds)
- Late arrivals or no-shows may result in lost time on the water or a missed session – refunds cannot be offered.
- Once parked, head to the north end of Miller’s Pond through the woodland area to meet the team, sign in, and get ready for your adventure!
Supervision Rules
- Ages 8-14 must be accompanied on the water by a responsible adult (18+) at a 1:2 ratio
- Ages 14+ can paddle independently
- All under 18s must be signed in on-site by a parent or legally appointed guardian
Location & Directions
DO NOT GO TO THE MAIN VISITORS CENTER, please follow these directions.
- From the M1: Take Junction 29 and join the A6175 towards Clay Cross/Chesterfield. After approx.. 500m turn LEFT on to Mill Lane and follow Mill Lane for approx. 1.5 miles. Immediately after passing under the M1 bridge take the left hand turning into Hardwick Park Centre, following the lane till you reach the Car Park & Café and toilets building.
2. Once parked, head to the north end of Millers Pond through the woodland area, keeping the lake on your right-hand side
3. You will see the kayak launch point, and our staff will be there to great you.

After your kayaking session, why not explore the rest of the park? Wander around the ponds and lower parklands, grab a snack at the café kiosk, or visit the toilets nearby. If you’re up for more adventure, follow the Oak Walk past Row Ponds and up to the grand Hardwick Hall and Stable Yard (entry fee applies).
